On September 3rd, 2024, the College of Engineering at Seoul National University (SNU) held a signing ceremony with the Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) for a development fund dedicated to research on future ship safety technologies. LRF will contribute £4 million (approximately 7 billion KRW) over the next five years, bringing its total donations to SNU to around 12 billion KRW.
The fund will support a global research team led by Professor Yonghwan Kim to advance ship safety technologies and train future experts, with collaboration from institutions in the US, UK, Japan, and Norway.
The signing ceremony was attended by key figures including President Honglim Yoo of Seoul National University, Dean Young-Oh Kim of the College of Engineering, Ruth Boumphrey, CEO of Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Gareth Weir, Deputy British Ambassador to Korea, and Sung-An Choi, Vice Chairman of Samsung Heavy Industries. The event also featured the signing of industry-academia MOUs between SNU’s global research team and Korea’s three major shipbuilders—HD Hyundai, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean. These collaborations are expected to help commercialize public-interest ship safety technologies for practical application in the industry.
